This is the scene of the once infamous "Smoke Hole" where the railway passed underneath in a tunnel. A part in the middle of the street was open to the air.. Each time a steam train passed underneath the smoke ensued from the hole. A local shopkeeper with premises nearby made it his lifelong campaign to get the hole covered. This eventually materialised His shop some years later was demolished to make way for the new head office of "The Woolwich Building Society".
