Last Tram Week  Tickets

London Transport decided to issue special ticket to mark the closure of the last of London's trams on 5 July 1952.

These were a little larger than normal tickets with the legend on the font, 'LAST TRAM WEEK JULY 1952'. On the reverse the dates of the first and last trams. The first ones being horse trams.

The date on the reverse of the tickets refers to the fact that London's first tramways started on 23 March 1861, between Marble Arch and Notting Hill Gate. The lines were taken up shortly after as the rails projected from the roadway, and were a danger to other road users.

Many believe it was a bad decision to get rid of the trams and replace them with motor buses. Today this point of view makes more sense than ever. Years and years of neglect however made it an expensive option to do all the work that was needed to repair the permanent way and rolling stock, so the easy option was taken.

Trams are now beginning to make a comeback to London. Some cities of the World never got rid of them. The only place in the UK being Blackpool.
