The tickets above date from around late 1970, they are ready for decimal the 'd' has been left off the price. The flat fare was 6d. London Transport were worried that after decimalisation (Feb 15 1971) there would be no coin to pay this fare with. A campaign was launched by newspapers of the day with the slogan 'Save our Sixpence'. This led to the retention of the sixpence as a two and a half pence coin. They needn't have worried by 1974 the fare had doubled to 5p, and by 1976 it had doubled again to 10p. Also within a few weeks of decimalisation most of the sixpenny coins were traveling in pairs as 5p. |
