Dear Mr King,

Thank you for your recent enquiry concerning product safety tests using animals.

We are committed to the highest safety standards for our products, which are used by millions of people daily. For many years we have also been equally committed to the complete eradication of animal testing as soon as this can be achieved without prejudicing human safety.

Today, in general our products reach the consumer without any animal testing.

  • We do not test our finished products on animals, but use human volunteers instead.
  • We generally use materials that are known to be safe, either from long experience or from published safety data.

To ensure the continued safety of our products, we have developed extensive databases which provide access to the available scientific literature, and enables detailed safety evaluations to be conducted without the requirement for animal testing. This will be of particular importance as new materials, important for consumer health care and environmental acceptability, are developed in the future. However, when essential to ensure the safety of consumers, customers, our workforce and the environment, and when no validated alternative methods are available, any animal testing will be reduced to the absolute minimum.

Although there is now a voluntary agreement in the United Kingdom not to undertake either testing of finished products or cosmetic ingredients on animals, we, along with our industry, will continue pressing for responsible policies on testing in Europe. This will be done by supporting the industry 3 Rs campaign - to Reduce, Refine and Replace the use of animals for all safety testing, and to share scientific data.

As in the past, we will continue to actively support and participate with outside bodies such as the Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments (FRAME). In search for alternatives, work is also being co-ordinated across Europe to ensure that improvements in the application of scientific knowledge to alternatives is progressed.

I hope these points of information are of interest and useful to you.

Your sincerely,

Miss Filiz Hassan
