Iceland - Reply Received 9 June 2003

I am not going to comment about this particular letter, I want you to make up your own mind what it says. If you have any comments, please send them to veg@yellins.com. Again, all comments will be published.

Hello Simon

Thank you for your e mail requesting information about our vegetarian range and attitudes to meat free ranges. In our stores we stock a selection of our own products which are suitable for vegetarians (although we do not produce a specifically vegetarian range), also we stock some Linda McCartney products, Dalepack vegetarian products as well as Quorn ready meals and products. I am aware that our vegetarian range may not be as large as some other supermarkets, but I think that it is an interesting and varied range. For example, our vegetable lasagne is a filling meal when served with chips, salad, vegetables or garlic bread. Some of our other products, such as vegetarian burgers or vegetable crispbakes are really filling and extremely tasty and are a really nice meal. I really like the cheese and leek crispbakes, although I'm not a vegetarian, they are a nice change. Also, I am sure that you are aware, Iceland were the first supermarket to ban GM ingredients in our own label products and we do not use artificial colours or flavours in any of our products. We also list every ingredient on our packaging - you would never see "E120" on an Iceland packet - we name the natural version, which in this case is cochineal. This way, customers always know exactly what they are eating. As for testing on animals, we do not participate in any practices that may harm animals nor do we inject animals with growth hormones in order to produce bigger portions.

I hope that this covers most of your questions. We also have a great deal of information on our website about our philosophies and information about the company.

Good Luck with your website.

Kind Regards

Ellen Pearson
