Waitrose - Reply Received 7 June 2003

I am not going to comment about this particular letter, I want you to make up your own mind what it says. If you have any comments, please send them to veg@yellins.com. Again, all comments will be published.

Thank you for your e-mail.

We have a wide range of ever changing and expanding range of vegetarian food available throughout our branches.

Waitrose does not carry out any product tests on animals nor have any of our own-brand products been tested on animals in the course of their development.

Our policy is to use raw materials and formulations which have a long history of safe use so that animal testing of our products is not necessary. Nevertheless, we recognize that at some stage in the past some ingredients may have been tested on animals, and for this reason we do not label our products "cruelty free" or use any other such label because it could be misleading.

However, we are currently investigating with our suppliers at what stage animal testing ceased, and we are actively working towards a cut off date of 1990. As I hope you can appreciate before making this commitment we need to be certain that systems are in place to guarantee that this is the case.

Regards,

Pippa Stone
