ARGUMENTS

Apart from Italy and India, which countries cater best for vegetarian tourists?

TURKEY - by far the best. Simple good quality seasonal ingredients cooked to perfection. Get there quick and tell them why you came. I've noticed menus change in the last 15 years in response to the demands or perceived demands of affluent tourists. Don't forget to book vegetarian meals on the flight. Turkey attracts so many of us that airlines often run out.

IN RECENT years, during which I have travelled extensively, I have found that Great Britain has developed better opportunities for vegetarians to enjoy their holidays as "normal" people than almost anywhere else. Less and less are we regarded as "freaks" or a nuisance to caterers. Also, a few years ago, I was very pleasantly surprised to find how easy it was to get vegetarian food in Argentina, much of it based on Italian cuisine. The place I have found it most difficult to obtain vegetarian food (other than omelettes) is France where the famed culinary skills do not seem to extend to any imaginative notion of meatless meals.

IN THE MANY food courts and hawker centres of Singapore there is a huge variety of wonderful vegetarian food. Unfortunately, if you pronounce it wrongly you may end up with pig's-organ soup, fish head curry or chicken feet stew.

WE RECENTLY enjoyed "best ever" eating-out experiences in and around Vancouver, British Columbia. The outstanding meals were not at vegetarian restaurants: there was plenty of choice and we were always served with enthusiasm, grace and flair. At the present exchange rate, restaurants offer exceptional value for British tourists. The meal of a lifetime, with stunning views of the Pacific, was less expensive than a sad offering at one of our motorway service stations. How much this country could learn ... Sadly, our holiday ended with a meal on Canadian Airlines which my friend described as "loathsome". Have any readers actually enjoyed a veggie airline meal or is that asking too much?

WITH chains such as McDonald's and Pizza Hut throughout the world, vegetarians would at least get chips and pizzas. We found vegetarian food without any problem in Kenya, Madagascar and Thailand.

Israel, which due to kosher laws has to have separate 'meat' and 'dairy' restaurants. Any dairy eatery with a 'kosher' certificate is fine for regular (non-vegan) vegetarians.
